For the last 20 years we've been wearing our hair as an expression of our natural selves. Some say it's a fad, others say it's a way of life, and still others are not aware of the evolution. Where are you in the scheme of things? Whether you are just starting to transition into natural hair by letting your perm grow out or starting Iocs, it is important to understand some of the basic styling options and tips that never go out of style. Here are some general descriptions of the basic styling techniques offered in the industry.

Classic Cornrows - Underhand three-strand braids interwoven to lay flat on the scalp. These braids can be parted, sculpted and designed into an endless variety of patterns with or without extensions. This is a great style option if you desire a neat, off-the-facc, close-to-lhe-head style. Avoid heavy extensions around the hairline to minimize breakage and balding. Cornrows that are tapered using a "feed in" technique preserve the hairline and give a professional finish.

Flat Twists - Two-section braids that lay flat on the scalp. These twists can be parted, sculpted and designed into an endless variety of patterns with or without extensions. This technique offers a softer finished look than cornrows.

Individual Braids - Free-hanging braids that can be created with or without extensions by dividing sections of hair into three equal pieces that arc woven into one another. The pattern should be even and consistent throughout the braid.

Coils - This style is great for naturally curly or textured hair. Small to medium sections of wet hair are gelled and formed into a cylindrical-shaped curl with a comb or by hand. Coils are best done on hair that is one to five inches in length. The tighter the hair texture, the better the coils. Coils can be styled closed so they maintain their cylindrical shape, or open (also known as a "twist-out") for a fuller look.

Double-Strand Twists - Entails taking two equal sections of hair and overlapping them into a candy cane pattern. These free-hanging twists can be styled on wet or dry hair, and can also be combined with cornrows or flat twists to create dimension. Double-strand twists can be worn closed or open (twist-out) to create a textured Afro.

Twist Extensions - Double-strand twists formed with human or synthetic hair for added length and dimension. These twists are great for anyone who is transitioning into their natural hair, as the hair is allowed to grow and expand around the extensions without breakage. Twist-outs, combinations with cornrows and flat twists, and updos are great styling options for these extensions.

Weaves - Achieved by sewing "wefled" hair onto corn-rows. Wefted hair is hair that has been sewn together to form a weave track. This hair is available in various lengths, textures, shapes and colors. There is no limit to how creative one can get with a wefted weave look. Afro weaves and curly weaves are very popular and easy to care for.

No matter what style or combination of techniques you choose, make sure you're up to code with your at-home hair care. Ask your stylist what products you will need to maintain your new look. Enjoy your journey!
